Carré d’Art – musée d'art contemporain de Nîmes

Katja Novitskova together with Hugo Laporte as a part of Art triennale La Contemporaine de Nîmes, Carré d'Art museum in Nîmes, France

At Carré d’Art – musée d'art contemporain de Nîmes, artists Hugo Laporte and Katja Novitskova propose the foundations of a museum and archaeological institution from a time we don’t yet know, though not so far from our own. It brings together what could be the traces and artifacts of a humanity to come, grappling with increasingly troubling ecological, technological, geopolitical and cultural issues. The “Oracle Museum” is built around a fictional museography, featuring a wide variety of objects, images, sounds, mythologies and characters made by the artists with machines and artificial intelligence, to give us a glimpse of a future that can still be avoided.

Presented during La Contemporaine de Nîmes, from April 5 to June 23, then extended until 22 September, 2024.

La Contemporaine de Nîmes is a new triennial of contemporary creation supported by the City of Nîmes. Every three years from 2024, an extract of today's art is presented across the city, around a major theme. Public spaces, monuments, heritage sites, museums, cultural and everyday places are thus taken over by recognized and emerging artists from the French and international scene, from all disciplines and all generations. Each edition of La Contemporaine is an invitation to discover and explore current creation and Nîmes differently, within the framework of a program that is at once demanding, generous and accessible.

he inaugural edition of La Contemporaine de Nîmes, presented from April 5 to June 23, 2024, has the title “A new youth” and the theme is current youth, its concerns and its links with the generations that precede it, through the notions inheritance and transmission. Its artistic direction is ensured by the duo Anna Labouze & Keimis Henni. The programming designed by the artistic directors is structured around four axes: A large multidisciplinary exhibition across the city bringing together

12 intergenerational pairs of artists in as many locations, entitled “The Flower and the Force”

6 highlights notably dedicated to the performing and performing arts

3 houses, meeting and conviviality spaces, with artists and collectives in residence

An associated program designed with a dozen cultural actors from Nîmes

Most of the artistic projects presented were created especially for La Contemporaine, in close connection with the context and the territory. Each project of the exhibition, highlights and houses has a participatory dimension with the association of residents of Nîmes at its creation.
