Growth arrows, ubiquitous in business infographics, scientific images, and conspiracy theories symbolize the expansion of humans into every aspect of our reality on micro and macro scales.
The shape of the forward- or upward-striving arrow wall-works, apparently poised to leap, is borrowed from mathematical charts in business reports and performance tables. Taking the graphic arrows as indicators of growth, the artist once again explores the activating power of visual signs. Associations with darts, snakes, eels or worms are intentional. In these works, which can certainly be understood as contemporary “symbols of acceleration”, art and design are combined with the fields of biology, perception psychology and economics. Growth potentials aim to highlight the well-known ecological context that a socio-political orientation towards competition, growth and further development leads to a threat to and decrease in biological diversity. The rapid acceleration of our systems probably makes species extinction unstoppable. Nevertheless, the artist sees development as a human need that can also drive positive change by enabling us to explore new territories and worlds, and discover new forms of life.
The works are made with a unique technique: UV-resistant digital prints are transferred onto polyurethane resin, trapping the ink between two layers of resin. In the process of curing some of the arrows also get a dry insect of a small plant stuck in the resin, a clear reference to amber and its ability to hold remnants of living things for millions of years. The growth arrow visual symbol itself can also be thought of as fossilised in the synthetic resin, a type capsul of its era.
